On September 21st the United Way of King County mobilized 12,000 people to volunteer at organizations across the county as part of their annual Day of Caring campaign. Community Schools Collaboration (CSC) hosted 11 volunteers from Amazon and 5 volunteers from AT&T at one of our high school sites, the Tyee Educational Complex.
Volunteers worked in classrooms across each of the small schools on the Tyee campus including: Global Connections High School, Academy of Citizenship and Empowerment, and Odyssey. Hosted throughout the day by student leaders, they assisted in math, science and language arts classrooms. Volunteers also provided career panels where they discussed college and career pathways. Not only were they able to support students in their academic subjects, they also provided them with the opportunity to gain professional experiences in public speaking and leadership.
The participating students were highly engaged and viewed the volunteers as a valuable resource to their campus. Several volunteers signed up to continue their
involvement with CSC in the future. While the tangible academic supports and career panels provided by volunteers were beneficial, providing CSC students with the opportunity to interact with and connect to the professional community was immeasurable. Special thanks to Amazon and AT&T for volunteering their time, and thank you to the United Way of King County for organizing this wonderful event.
