On May 21st roughly four- hundred students at Showalter Middle School in the Tukwila School District participated in the 1st Annual Showalter College Fair. Izchel Chacon, Community Schools Collaboration (CSC) Site Manager worked together with staff from Showalter’s NAV 101 and AVID programs along with Christopher Wells of the South King County College Access Network (SKCCAN) to make the College Fair possible. “SKCCAN had successfully collaborated with CSC on early outreach programming and workshops previously, so when the opportunity presented itself to partner again, we were pleased to do so” comments Wells.
The day began with students flooding into the gym to visit the various college tables, including: University of Washington, South Seattle Community College, Pacific Lutheran University and Central Washington University. The students, armed with a list of questions, engaged in meaningful conversations with the college representatives.
The afternoon continued with Parent Workshops covering topics such as: Summer Programs, Tips to Support Middle School Students Academically, College Bound Scholarship, and Financial Aid (including the WASFA for undocumented students). The room of parents and students alike had very thoughtful questions throughout the presentations. The event was extremely successful in helping middle school students and their families begin to picture college for themselves and their students in the future.
Many thanks to the College Fair Planning Committee (Christopher Wells-SKCCAN, Mr. Gregg, Mrs. Thomas-Nav 101 and Ms. Britto-AVID)! And many thanks to Izchel Chacon for bringing everyone together in this effort! “Izchel was a pleasure to collaborate with, her connections to the students, staff and school resources at Showlater Middle School was integral to the success of the College Fair and Workshops” reflects Wells.
